Hebei North University (HBNU) is located in Zhangjiakou, one of the venues for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics. Collecting the soul of the Great Wall and grassland and gaining the essence of Zhangyuan culture, HBNU, which has long history and profound cultural accumulation, is a comprehensive provincial undergraduate university with the authority to confer master's degrees in the northwestern part of Hebei Province.

In September 2003, with the approval of State Education Ministry, Hebei North University was founded by combining the former Zhangjiakou Medical College, Zhangjiakou Teacher’s College and Zhangjiakou Agricultural College. The predecessor of Zhangjiakou Medical University is Jinchaji Bethune Health School, which was founded in 1945. In 1982, Zhangjiakou Medical University was approved to be an undergraduate university by Ministry of Education. Zhangjiakou Teachers’ College was founded in 1950 and Zhangjiakou Agricultural College was founded in 1923. During the long history of school running for nearly 100 years, the university has accumulated rich experiences, has advanced quality in teaching and researching and has contributed greatly to local economic construction and social development.

The university has four campuses: the West Campus, the East Campus, the South Campus and the North Campus. The campuses cover the area of 1,045,300 square meters; the construction area is 476,000 square meters. The University is equipped with complete modern teaching facilities, advanced campus network, experimental centers, provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and basic laboratories of various disciplines. The library of the university has a collection of 2,070,000 books. The university owns 2 direct affiliated hospitals, 2 indirect affiliated hospitals, 296 teaching hospitals, farms, ranches, animal hospitals and educational practice bases. The First Affiliated Hospital is the largest and most powerful Class III Grade-A hospital and national baby-care hospital in the intersection of Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, and has most complete treating departments, advanced equipment and high-level medical treatment, integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, prevention and rehabilitation.

The university has 5242 staff (including two direct affiliated hospitals), among which there is 1568 in-service staff in the university headquarters, 197 professors and 430 associate professors, there are 1124 teachers with doctor’s or master’s degrees and there are 1205 Master Tutors. The university has more than 25,000 full-time students, among whom more than 1200 are postgraduate students, 275 are international students. The university has set 18 secondary colleges and schools, 1 department and 1 teaching department: School of Basic Medical Science, School of Medical Laboratory, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Science, School of Law and Politics (School of Teacher Education), School of Marxism, School of Liberal Arts, School of Foreign Languages, School of Economics Management, School of Information Science and Engineering, School of Arts, School of Animal Science and Technology, School of Agricultural Science and Technology, International Education College, Clinical Medical College, Graduate School, School of Continuing Education and Department of Public Physical Education.

With complete disciplines, covering science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, literature, management, jurisprudence, economy, art, history and pedagogy, the university has formed a development pattern with medicine and agronomy as its advantages, and other disciplines are integrated and promoted each other. At present, there are four first-class master’s degree authorization programs in clinical medicine, pharmacy, basic medicine and crop science, and five master’s degree authorization categories for specialty of clinical medicine, agriculture, traditional Chinese medicine, pedagogy and veterinary. Pharmacology, medical informatics and pathology & pathophysiology are three key disciplines in Hebei Province, crop cultivation and geoponics, agricultural economic management, animal nutrition and feed science, human anatomy and histology and embryology are four key developing disciplines in Hebei Province. Orthopedics surgery is provincial key medical discipline, Respiratory and Critical Illness is provincial key medical developing discipline; Orthopedics surgery, gynecology, otolaryngology and head & neck surgery, neurology, dermatology, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery are 7 provincial key clinical specialties. Stomatology, geriatrics, anesthesiology, general surgery and medical imaging department are 5 provincial key cultivating clinical specialties.

The university has set 74 undergraduate specialties, among which Clinical Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Laboratory Technology are traditional advantageous undergraduate programs with more than 30 years history. Medical Laboratory and Information Management & Information System (medicine category) are the characteristic specialties in North China; Medical Laboratory Technology and Pharmacy are national first class undergraduate specialty construction points; and 24 specialties, including clinical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, belong to the first batch of first-class undergraduate specialties construction points in Hebei Province; five teaching teams, such as the pathology, intelligent terminal development, biochemistry course group, pharmacy program, and food science and engineering program teaching teams, are provincial excellent teaching teams; biochemistry and molecular biology and other three provincial courses are provincial ideology teaching teams; pathophysiology, experimental diagnostics, clinical microbiology and testing, surgery and animal physiology five courses are provincial quality courses; secondary school language teaching design are provincial quality sharing course; Ten courses, including histology and embryology, are provincial first-class undergraduate courses; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, together with other two courses, is provincial model course. There are 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, including Pathophysiology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Medical Laboratory Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Clinical Skills Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Information Technology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Medical Morphology Experimental Teaching Center and Traditional Chinese Medicine Experimental Teaching Cente; Craftsmen's Engineering Curriculum Ethics Teaching and Research Demonstration Center is the Provincial Courses Ethics Teaching and Research Demonstration Center; Pharmacy Teaching Team, the New Pharmacy Teaching Team, New Energy Science and Engineering, Department of Clinical Medicine are three provincial excellent basic teaching organizations.

The university is one of the first batch national first aid education pilot schools, it has 6 provincial R&D platforms: Hebei provincial key laboratory of neuropharmacy, Hebei provincial key laboratory of agricultural products quality and safety analysis and detection, Hebei provincial population health information engineering technology research center; the second batch of  “2011 Collaborative Innovation Center” in Hebei Province—potato industry, Hebei Provincical Photovoltaic Conductive Film Engineering Research Center, Hebei Provincial Mushroom Cultivation Technology Innovation Center. There are 6 provincial bases, 2 science popularization bases and 1 Star Innovation Space, namely: Hebei Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences in Higher Education Institutions (Ecological Construction and Industrial Development Research Center), Hebei Key Contact Think Tank (Ecological Construction and Regional Development Research Think Tank in the Two Capital Regions), Hebei Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Research Base (Research Base for Construction of Two Capital Regions ), Hebei Provincial Association for Science and Technology Think Tank Research Base (Research Base of Hebei Provincial Association for Science and Technology Think Tank for the Capital of "Two Regions "Green Development, Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Base of Hebei Province, Science Popularization Base of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Hebei Province), Science Popularization Demonstration Base of Hebei Province (Scientific Research and Education Base for the Construction of Two Regions in the Capital of Hebei Province, Science Popularization Demonstration Base of Intelligent Technology of Hebei North University and Hebei Ecological Agricultural Star Innovation Space).

The international exchange of the university is becoming more and more active, and the international cooperation of education is constantly strengthened. The University has established long-term and stable cooperative relations with universities and scientific research institutes in Russia, Finland, the Great Britain, Finland, the United States, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Australia, Zealand and other countries and regions, and employs well-known domestic and foreign scholars as part-time or visiting professors. The University has established good exchange and cooperation relationship with many foreign universities. At present, there are international students from 17 countries, including Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, etc. In 2010, the University joined the 1+2+1 double-degree program of the Sino-US Talent Training Program, and established substantive cooperative relations with 41 state universities from the United States in terms of student training, teacher exchange and discipline construction. In recent years, the university has successively activated international exchange programs such as "Sino-Finnish talent training project" and "Sino-Russian government scholarship program", continuously selecting excellent teachers and students to study abroad.

The university sponsors and publicly publishes Hebei North University Journal (Medicine, Social Science, Natural Science) and Hebei North University Newspaper.
